Shared, Semi-Dedicated, VPS, or Dedicated Hosting: Which One Do You Actually Need?
If you're setting up a website for the first time, one of the first confusing choices you'll hit is: what kind of hosting do I buy? The names sound technical, but the idea behind each one is actually simple. Think of it like housing.
Shared Hosting: Renting a Room in a Big House
With shared hosting, your website lives on the same computer (server) as hundreds of other websites. You all share the same resources — like roommates sharing a kitchen, water, and electricity in one house. It's the cheapest option because the cost is split across everyone.
This is good enough for almost all personal blogs, MSME websites, portfolios, and anyone just starting out who doesn't need higher-end resources. Most brochure (i.e what we often call standard) websites can work with this.
Trade-off: if one of your "roommates" gets a sudden traffic spike or has a problem, it can occasionally slow things down for everyone else too. In order to avoid this, everyone's traffic will be given only up to a certain allowance and allocated up to a certain maximum resource usage in order to ensure fair use for everyone. For example, ICT Gurus will allocate you up to 5% of the server CPU, and ration different resources, including how many databases you can start, etc.
Example pricing (ICT Gurus EA Limited): Shared plans start around $5.75/month, with higher tiers (like unlimited domains) going up to about $15.50/month. Check here to see the different plans
Semi-Dedicated Hosting: A House With Far Fewer Roommates
Semi-dedicated hosting is the middle ground between shared and fully private hosting. Instead of hundreds of websites sharing one server, only a small, controlled number of accounts share it. It's like moving from an apartment building to a gated community with mansions side by side, sharing a gate, a walking path, and cleaning services.
Good for: growing websites, web apps, or online stores that have outgrown basic shared hosting but don't need (or can't yet justify) a complete server all to themselves, where having a full server is still overkill.
Trade-off: costs more than shared hosting, but gives noticeably higher performance since more resources are now available for every account. At ICT Gurus EA, this is where an account starts getting at least one or more dedicated CPU, depending on the package.
Example pricing: Semi-dedicated plans start at around $32/month. You can check the available plans here.
VPS Hosting: Your Own Apartment in a Shared Building
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. Picture an apartment building: everyone shares the same building (physical server), but each apartment (your VPS) is fully separated, locked, and yours alone. Self-contained. What your neighbor does in their apartment doesn't affect your space at all. It is more like a dedicated server, but only at the software level. The software running in your VPS operates independently and knows nothing about any physical sharing of resources at the hardware level. If it is allocated 4GB of RAM, it knows that that is all there is, while at the hardware level there are thousands of RAM sliced for every account. This is a good compromise between a fully dedicated server where both hardware and software are dedicated.
Good for: websites with steady traffic, online stores, or anyone who wants more control, more reliability, and room to grow — without paying for an entire building. It can comfortably run websites for corporate organizations and mid-level learning institutions with portals.
Trade-off: usually requires a bit more technical know-how to manage because you will be able to install your own applications and manage the server. For ICT Gurus, you will choose to have it with or without a panel. You're not charged for a management panel. Without a panel, you simply get the server with your favourite operating system like Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. Good to note that without the panel, the support is only up to the hardware level, but you're in full control of your software.
Example pricing: VPS plans start around $17/month (OpenVZ) to $24/month (KVM, a more robust type of VPS). As you can guess, KVM type of VPS is more powerful that OopenVS. Learn more from here.
Dedicated Hosting: Owning the Whole House
With dedicated hosting, an entire physical server belongs to you and only you. Nobody else's website lives there, nobody else's traffic affects yours, and you get full control over how it's set up. It is like owning a home: if you're not there, you can lock it, and it sits idle.
Good for: large, high-traffic websites, businesses handling sensitive data, or anyone who needs maximum power, security, and control. Large government agencies, big corporate bodies, higher learning institutions, resource intensive web applications like the ones used by taxi companies, Google Maps, tax authorities, etc use such.
Trade-off: it's the most expensive option and typically requires either technical skill or paying someone to manage it for you. ICT Gurus EA offers server management services if you don't have an in-house server admin.
Example pricing: Dedicated servers start around $63/month. Learn more from here
So Which One Should You Choose?
Ask yourself two honest questions: How much traffic do I realistically expect? How much control do I need?
| If you're... | Consider... |
| Just starting out, low budget, low traffic, most MSMEs | Shared Hosting |
| Growing steadily, need more resources and power | Semi-Dedicated Hosting |
| Running a business site or store with consistently growing traffic, need more admin controls, need to install more propriatory software | VPS Hosting |
| Running a large platform or handling sensitive data | Dedicated Hosting |
There's no shame in starting small. Most websites begin on shared hosting and move up as they grow — it's far easier (and cheaper) to upgrade later than to overpay for capacity you don't need yet. For example, you don't need to hire a whole 60+ seater bus if you're alone or just a few of you.
